DAY 12: LAST DAY IN ST. ANDREWS
We slowed our pace a bit today to savor our final day in St. Andrews. Just as we were about ready to walk to the bus stop, a nice fellow who lives next door popped by looking for our hostess and offered us a ride into St. Andrews. Along the way he shared a bit about his work as a guide for visiting golfers. He asked about our visit and shared about his own genealogical journey and an interesting story about a golfer on one of his tour who made a meaningful family history connection. These conversations with locals really help us feel a connection to the area.
Our first stop today was the Museum of St. Andrews, which is housed in a Victorian era building built to look a bit like a castle. We learned more about the history of the area and also viewed a few rare early (16th-17th century) printed books on display.
We found a nice little spot on South Street to eat lunch. All week we'd been seeing long lines outside this place and people coming out with ice cream. We were glad to learn they also had tables inside for tasty food. The walls were covered with photos telling the story of the family of Italian immigrants that started a little confectioners shop around the turn of the 20th century and has expanded and operated the business through four generations.

After lunch we took a leisurely walk around the town and ended up at the East Sands beach. We sat on a bench and watched the sailboats and people walking along the beach. There were a fair number of brave souls in the cold North Sea water, including dogs and children. It was a very pleasant hour in the sun with a gentle breeze and a wonderful view.
We walked back into the town center to enjoy a special dinner we had planned to celebrate our anniversary at a nice seafood restaurant that was highly recommended to us. It was delicious and very special.
When we returned to our home away from home, our hostess invited us to join the family on the patio to enjoy the pleasant evening air and her lovely flower garden. It was the perfect ending to the day. We learned a little more of their story, including that our host Stewart has published a book on the scientific research he has conducted in his long and fruitful career.
Alison and Stewart have been gracious hosts, and we appreciate all the many extra kindnesses they have offered us. We loved getting to know them and their very intelligent and well-mannered son, and even their excellent watchdog Tommy.
